Potential HABs notifications

Sign Up to Stay Informed

This email-based system will inform the public when the weather and lake conditions are primed for potential HABs. When these conditions occur, the Biological Field Station Staff will notify those who sign up below. These emails will serve as a heads-up so that the community can be watchful when entering or interacting with the lake.  This system is designed as a warning for potential water hazards, but does not change any of the current testing and notification procedures through BFS and the NY DEC. The field station will continue their diligent monitoring, testing, and reporting per their usual channels. This system is designed to notify the public so they can make informed decisions about how to enjoy the lake.

This site was created to be a resource for residents and visitors of Otsego County on harmful algal blooms, their risks, and the research and mitigation efforts happening in our county. Representatives from 15+ local agencies, municipalities, and organizations came together in May 2023 to better coordinate our efforts in addressing harmful algal blooms. Our partners include but are not limited to: Otsego County, Otsego County Conservation Association, Otsego Lake Association, Suny Oneonta Biological Field Station, and the Canadarago Lake Improvement Association.
